Crockett county voters all but overlooked entirely the special election held last Saturday to decide on four proposed amendments to the Texas constitution. Only 17 eligible voters in Crockett County, one of the smallest responses ever recorded in a state election, expressed an opinion on the issues involved. Voting was held only in the Ozona box, outlying precincts failing to hold the elections. The seventeen voters who did take the trouble to go to the polls were divided in their opinions of the proposed constitutional changes in about the same proportions of the total vote on the issues throughout the state.

Patience and perseverance finally paid off Tuesday afternoon when the sheriff’s department broke Ozona’s purse-snatching ring, in operation here since January. The leader of the gang was taken into custody only 45 minutes after he pulled his last job. After a report from a high school student that her purse was missing from her car when she returned after registering, and a tip from an alert citizen, a 12-year-old Latin-American boy was taken into custody. He confessed to a purse stealing binge that dated back to January and implicated two other youths. The other two boys were taken into custody and over half the missing purses were recovered from hiding places all over town. Ranging in age from 12 to 16, the boys will be placed in the custody of their parents until juvenile court convenes at a later date.

DEADLINE FOR HISTORY STORIES COMING UP — September 1 is the deadline for family histories to be turned in for the Crockett County History Book, and the museum has been a busy place this week. Everybody waited till the last minute, but stories came in at a fast and furious pace. Here Mrs. Ira Carson looks over a picture of early day settlers while Mrs. Roy Henderson delivers her family history. Mrs. Joe Bean looks on. The framed print in the background is the official Crockett County Bicentennial logo, created by Mrs. Jackie Womack.
