Tennis gets into full swing
Ozona—The Ozona High School tennis team opened its season with a strong showing at the Ozona Tennis Tournament on March 26 and 27, with both varsity and junior varsity players earning top finishes.
On the varsity side, Bella Perez and Atleigh Morris claimed consolation in girls doubles, while Ivan Mata placed third in boys singles. Mara Crenwelge and Ori Patel earned consolation in mixed doubles, and Nolan and Luis Romero finished fourth in boys doubles.
Junior varsity players also posted solid results. Jocelynn Ayala won consolation in girls singles, while Brenda Hernandez and Coby Gonzalez earned consolation in mixed doubles. Johnny Serrano and Adonai Chavez placed fourth in mixed doubles.
Building momentum early
As the season gets into full swing, players say the sport demands more than just physical skill. Each match requires focus, strategy and the ability to adjust quickly.
“I think it's been pretty successful,” junior Mara Crenwelge said.
Sophomore Ori Patel expressed similar confidence in the team’s outlook.
“I think it's going to go great. We have a lot of strong players and a lot of new players who can get strong over the years,” Patel said.
Strategy on and off the court
Players credit coach Taylor Cervantez for helping them stay composed and make strategic adjustments during matches.
“She's very dedicated to our practices, and she really knows how to calm me down whenever I get worked up on court,” Crenwelge said.
Beyond match results, athletes say the season is about growth, both individually and as a team.
“My goals are to win as many matches as I can, do my best, and help my teammates reach their goals,” Patel said.
Crenwelge added that she hopes to advance further in postseason play.
“[My goals are] to hopefully make it to region, and then go to state,” Crenwelge said.
More than just a game
Players say tennis is as mental as it is physical, requiring planning before each point begins.
“You start by picking a position of where you're going to hit your serve, and then you have a game plan before you start the point,” Crenwelge said. “You know, you're going to hit it down the line or you're going to go crosscourt and hit to their weaker side.”
“You hit more balls than them until they hit it out,” Patel said.
A healthy Crockett County requires great community news.
