Two youths, both charged with theft and held in the Crockett County jail, escaped from the county bastille early Monday evening after prying aside a bar over a jail window and squeezing through an eight-inch opening.
One of the youths, Jimmy Powell, 19, from Tennessee, charged with theft of a pickup from the Al Kruger ranch, was recaptured by Sheriff Frank James and Deputy “Red” Woodard a few minutes after the escape when he “hitched” a ride in the officers’ car on the Del Rio road south of Ozona where the officers were on the look-out for a Mexican involved in a fight.
The other prisoner, 15-year-old George Harp, from New York City held here on a charge of theft of personal effects from the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. Marbury Morrison, is still at large. He is believed to have caught a ride, possibly east, soon after the escape and is being sought by Texas officers all over the state.
