San Antonio—A group of Ozona Middle School students earned statewide recognition after a standout performance at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association state meet earlier this month.

Competing in San Antonio on April 11, the Ozona Middle School (OMS) team finished as state runner-up in sweepstakes, a cumulative award recognizing overall team excellence.

The highlight of the competition came from the school’s numbers team, Ethan Ramon, Andres Rodriguez, Sawyer Heathcott and Nico Fullingim, who claimed the state championship title in their category, outperforming teams from across Texas.

The individual accolades were equally impressive. Ethan Ramon earned the title of state champion in mathematics, while Nico Fullingim secured first place in number sense.

The calculator team, made up of Andres Rodriguez, Ethan Ramon, Adrian Fullingim and Brady Fierro, placed second in the state. The mathematics team, Ramon, Rodriguez, Heathcott and Nico Fullingim, finished third overall.

A total of 17 schools competed in the same division as Ozona Middle School at the state meet.

Coach Deborah Ramon commended the eighth graders for being wonderful leaders in the program and said she is proud of how all the students performed at the meet.

Supporting the team alongside Ramon were coaches Nancy Brockman, Sally Oglesby, Collyn Glaspie and Tiffany Esparza.
