Ozona Volunteer Firemen have been kept busy with grass fires the past couple of weeks. The department had 13 alarms and put in approximately 63 man-hours fighting fires. Eleven of the alarms were grass fires, five of which can be attributed to fireworks and the burning of trash. The others were a gas meter fire and a truck fire.

Ed Flores, who also has ties to Ozona, was standing on the front porch of his house off of Pandale Road at Gate 13, when an explosion occurred, according to Crockett County Sheriff Robert Rodriguez. The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 3. Flores told law enforcement and emergency officials that he didn't remember much of the incident, but that he was standing on the porch and then was on the septic tank, which was a distance from the house, Rodriguez said. Crockett County Fire Marshal Steve Kenley said the cause of the explosion may have been a propane gas leak.
