Voters elect new district attorney, set stage for November

Ozona—Voters went to the polls to vote in the Texas 2024 primary election on March 5. The results of the election determined party nominees for statewide seats, including, U.S. Senate and district-based congressional and legislative seats. Voters will choose from the nominees in November’s general election.

Some local seats were determined during this election. The election results include the following:

Trump and Biden are the front-runners of the Presidential general election once again.

Ted Cruz and Colin Allred will go on to the U.S. Senate race.

US House District 23

Santos Limon won against Lee Bausinger in the Democratic primary. Incumbent Tony Gonzales and Brandon Herrera are going into a runoff on the Republican side of the ticket.

Texas House District 53

Democrat Joe P. Herrera was uncontested and will face Wes Virdell who beat Hatch Smith in the Republican primary.

Railroad Commissioner

Katherine Culbert won against Bill Burch in the Democratic primary. Incumbent Christi Craddick beat out four other candidates in the Republican primary.

Texas Supreme Court Place 2

Democrat DaSean Jones beat Randy Sarosdy and will go on to challenge Republican incumbent Jimmy Blacklock in November.

Texas Supreme Court Place 4

Democrat Christine Vinh Weems was unopposed and is up against Republican incumbent John Devine.

Texas Supreme Court Place 6

Democrat Bonnie Lee Goldstein will face off against Republican incumbent Jane Bland.

Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Chief Justice

Democrat Holly Taylor will go up against Republican David J. Schenck who beat incumbent Sharon Keller.

Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 7

Democrat Nancy Mulder will face off against Republican Gina Parker who beat incumbent Barbara Parker Hervey.

Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 8

Democrat Chika Anyiam will go up against Repblican Lee Finley who beat incumbent Michelle Slaughter.

District Attorney, 112th Judicial District

Stephen Dodd won against incumbent Laurie English.

Crockett County, Pecos County, Sutton County, Reagan County, and Upton County’s new DA, Stephen Dodd returned home to Big Lake from Lubbock about 11 years ago and opened a law office. He said on his Facebook page he is “active in programs to assist others with their sobriety, and I am extraordinarily proud of my sobriety and commitment to helping others.”
