Letter to the Editor

February 27, 2025

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my concern about the lack of transparency in the renewal of contracts for high-level school officials within our district. Specifically, it is troubling when these discussions take place behind closed doors, without offering the community any insight into the decision-making process. This approach raises questions, particularly when the individuals in question have been recognized for their contributions to our schools and community, as seen with the recent award of TEPSAN of the Year.

The publication of accolades for these individuals, followed by the unexpected non-renewal of their contracts, leaves many in our community feeling confused and uncertain. It is difficult to reconcile how someone who has earned such recognition is then not given the opportunity to continue serving in their role. When decisions like these are made without sufficient explanation or open discussion, it inevitably leads to distrust and concern.

Our community prides itself on being deeply connected, and it is important that we value the individuals who have invested their time and energy into nurturing this connection. When local leaders with strong roots in our community are passed over, we must ask: How can we expect to replace them with someone equally invested in our children's future, especially if they are also deeply rooted in our community?

I respectfully ask that the board and leadership prioritize transparency, not just in the renewal of contracts but in all decisions that affect our schools. The community deserves open dialogue and the opportunity to understand the reasoning behind such critical decisions, especially when they involve individuals who have demonstrated exemplary service and dedication to our children and our schools.

Sincerely,

Concerned citizen of Ozona

The Crockett County Consolidated Common School District Superintendent Raul Chavarria said, "Mrs. Cruz is still under contract; she'll remain that way next year. So administrators are on a two-year rolled contract, and she will be under contract.

‘As you can imagine, in a small town like this, privacy is [important], and I do respect that. Nothing was worked out. That vote is public, and you can check the records.

"The superintendent is not part of the vote. There's only so much I can expand on. So beyond that, it's a private matter."

Mrs. Cruz declined to comment.
