Crockett County to receive FEMA grant

Crockett County—Crockett County was awarded a FEMA grant to help the county develop a hazard mitigation plan. The grant came through the Department of Emergency Management, and the grant will help identify areas that could pose a hazard in the event of an emergency. 

Crockett County is receiving the $96,000 grant, which the county must match 25 percent.

“The hazard mitigation plan will allow someone to do a big survey of the county to see what needs to be addressed during an emergency or for an emergency,” Frank Tambunga, Crockett County Judge, said. “They will look at everything and see what we need to be setting up a plan in case something happens.” 

Companies interested in conducting the survey could call the county with questions. The Commissioner’s Court set a proposal deadline of May 30 at 4 p.m. 

“Once we get the proposals, we'll have an administrative review and evaluation period,” Tambunga said.

That evaluation period will last from June 2 to June 13. 

There has been concerns about federal grant money being frozen, however, Crockett County’s FEMA grant should not be adversely affected.

“As far as I know, the Texas Department of Emergency Management has said that we continue as planned, and everything should fall into place,” Tambunga said. 

“We received a notice, saying that all the federal funding had been placed on hold. When I checked with the Texas Department of Emergency Management, they said [the holds] are for future grant applications. We were approved back in late November.”
